The coolant expansion tank on the mini did the thing yesterday

So I had a bit of an interesting lunch break yesterday and i had just placed my order when i started smelling antifreeze but my temp gauge was still within normal perimeters and the cooling fan wasn’t running so I just figured it was one of the other cars around me, but then a few seconds later steam starts emerging from the hood and is almost immediately followed by the coolant tank literally exploding in two and dumping water everywhere. Luckily my coworker came to the rescue and saved the day . (I think she really just wanted her food more than anything else. ) After a mildly belittling ride back to work where my coworker made it very clear that her ranger has never left her stranded anywhere I kindly asked the shop mechanic/tow truck driver if he could go pick up my car which he obliged to do since he already had to run to the boss’s house. So now the mini sits at my work for an unknown amount of time until my new fancy aluminum expansion tank shows up.

At least it looks good on the company tow truck.

Just looked at aluminum evap tanks for the 7.3 just for kicks based off previous comments. Nope. If the 250 was like 12 years younger, maybe. But fancy aluminum surrounded by yuck and rust. Nah I'm good.

I’ve never had that, but there was the time I was driving home in my clubman when I noticed the heat getting weak. Turned out it was very low on coolant because of the classic thermostat housing leak. Fortunately it wasn’t far and it was somewhat cold out so I made it home.

They must have finally figured out how to make coolant systems, I’ve had exactly one minor leak in the 2013 and it’s getting close to 100k.

So what happened? The plastic just failed over time or something?
